At our last event, I was asked about the about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and it’s availability on island. I first learned about HBOT when my significant other started going to naturopath Dr. Kevin Gibson’s office (Pacific Integrative Medicine) here in Honolulu. HBOT can aid a person’s difficulty to heal by providing increased oxygen availability. It can also aid in the efficacy of other treatments that benefit from increased oxygen levels in tissue. On a cellular level, limited oxygen in an area hinders the body’s natural ability to heal. HBOT, as a primary or supplementary treatment, has been used to treat the effects of infection, non-healing wounds, radiation damage, brain injury, as well as the short and long-term side effects of chemotherapy. There are little to no side effects, as HBOT provide oxygen naturally in a pressurized, enclosed chamber. Here in Honolulu, the Hyperbaric Treatment Center has a multi-person chamber that may be available to patients referred by a treating provider under a specific set of symptom indications. This location was primarily used to treat divers with emergency decompression sickness, but has now seen an increase in patients dealing with the long-term effects of radiation damage. Below are the contacts for both Dr. Gibson and the Hyperbaric Treatment Center, in addition to a site where you can get information on purchasing or renting your own HBOT chamber. Additionally, our friends at Advanced Medical Therapies in Seattle, WA have a great HBOT program and information page on their website here.
